Wolf detection in the Steg on January 20, 2024

On January 20, 2024, a dead deer calf was reported to the game warden in Grosssteg by the game warden of the affected hunting ground. According to current knowledge, it had been hunted by two wolves. Genetic samples were collected to identify the two wolves individually. These samples will be analyzed in the laboratory over the next few weeks.

Wolves avoid contact with humans and avoid them if possible. Nevertheless, wolves occasionally cross settlement areas or pursue prey whose winter habitats are close to settlements. This behavior is classified as harmless. The wildlife authorities will keep a close eye on the area to rule out the possibility of wolves displaying unusual behavior.

If the presence of wolves is suspected, such as direct observations, tracks or scat, the Office of Environment must be contacted immediately. Important additional information includes the location (exact coordinates), date, circumstances and, if possible, photos.
