Architects, construction managers and engineering professions in the construction industry (BWBG)

Authorization

The independent practice of the profession of architects or other qualified professions in the field of construction according to the list below is subject to a permit. The Law on Architects and Other Qualified Professions in the Field of Construction (Construction Professions Act; BWBG) regulates the requirements for the practice of these professions:

  • Construction manager
  • Building physicist
  • Fire protection specialist, fire protection consultant
  • Electrical engineer
  • Electrical engineer
  • Energy consultant
  • Facade and metal construction engineer
  • Geologist
  • Geomatics engineer
  • Heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and plumbing engineer
  • Heating engineer
  • Landscape architect
  • Lighting designer, lighting designer, and lighting designer
  • Ventilation and air conditioning engineer
  • Room planner
  • Sanitary engineer
  • Environmental engineer
  • Surveyor

The scope of activities of each profession is defined in Articles 5-17 of the Ordinance on Architects and Other Qualified Professions in the Field of Construction (Bauwesen-Berufe-Verordnung; BWBV) described in more detail.

The Office of National Economy evaluates the applications and decides on their approval or rejection. Please address your application for a permit to practice a profession under this law or the application for the mutation of an already existing permit to the Office of National Economy, Department of Economy.

Subject matter and purpose

The purpose of the Construction Professions Act is to enforce the recognized rules of construction technology and the art of building, particularly with a view to ensuring human safety and health, and to promote economical planning and construction that meets the need for environmental protection and local appearance.

Furthermore, within the framework of this law, Directives 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7 September 2005 on the recognition of professional qualifications (OJ L 255, 30.9.2005, p. 22) are implemented.
