eGMB

Since July 5, 2023, the GMB has also been displayed digitally as an eGMB via eID.li. The eGMB can be used alongside the physical GMB as legally valid proof of cross-border activity in Liechtenstein. Until further notice, the GMB will be issued in card format and digitally as an eGMB.

The legal basis for the eGMB was created by the government at its meeting on January 17, 2023 with the amendment to the Ordinance on the Free Movement of Persons. The amended ordinance has been in force since March 1, 2023.

Questions and answers on the digital cross-border commuter registration confirmation (eGMB)How can the eGMB be obtained?

The eGMB is provided via the eID.li app. All GMB holders receive the eGMB automatically and free of charge in the eID.li app in addition to the GMB card. Only the latest version of the eID.li app needs to be installed. This is available in the respective app store.

Can a physical cross-border commuter registration confirmation (GMB) in credit card format be dispensed with?

No. The eGMB can only be issued together with an existing or new physical GMB in credit card format. A purely digital issue is not yet possible.

Does the physical GMB still have to be presented in addition to the eGMB?

In principle, the eGMB is sufficient as legally valid proof of cross-border activity in Liechtenstein. However, it is advisable to continue to carry the physical GMB with you.

Where is the eGMB valid?

The eGMB serves as proof of cross-border activity in Liechtenstein for nationals of an EEA member state.

Will the application process for the GMB change?

No, the application process for the GMB remains unchanged for the time being. The cross-border commuter activity of EEA nationals must be reported. In the case of employment, the notification must be made by the employer. The notification of cross-border commuter activity must be submitted within ten days of the commencement of the business activity or the start of the employment relationship.

What happens if there is no data connection (offline)?

The eGMB is generally based on data obtained directly from the relevant register. However, the eGMB can also be retrieved if there is no connection to the registers as long as it has been retrieved online at least once in the past. The update date can be used to determine how up-to-date the data retrieved from the eGMB is.

Why is the eGMB not displayed in the eID.li app?

There can be several reasons for this:

-          The eGMB can only be issued together with an existing or new physical GMB in credit card format. If you still have an "old" GMB in paper format, this cannot be displayed as an eGMB.

-          The eID.li app has not yet been updated.

-          The eID.li app could not yet connect to the corresponding register.

-          You do not have a valid GMB.

Can the data of the physical GMB in credit card format and the eGMB differ?

Yes, this is possible. If an online connection is active, the eGMB data is more up-to-date, as the eGMB mirrors the data in the corresponding register. It is also possible that the eGMB can already be retrieved even though the physical card has not yet been delivered.

I have lost my GMB in credit card format, but at the same time I have an eGMB. Do I have to report the loss of the card?

Yes, a loss report must be submitted for lost ID cards so that a new ID card can be issued. If a valid ID card is lost, a corresponding report can be made to the Migration and Passport Office. If the loss of the residence permit is related to a criminal offense (e.g. theft), the report must be made to the state police.

What happens if the battery runs out?

If the eID.li app cannot be called up due to an empty battery, for example, the eGMB cannot be presented as a legally valid ID document. In such cases, the physical GMB in credit card format must be presented.
