Promotion of language courses

German is the official language according to the constitution. A certain command of German is therefore an essential prerequisite for life in Liechtenstein and integration. Good language skills are also of central importance for education. In turn, a good education increases the chances of finding a qualified, well-paid job; an important prerequisite for taking advantage of many opportunities in Liechtenstein.

The Principality of Liechtenstein supports the attendance of German courses aimed at independent, elementary language use.

Who is supported

Under certain conditions, the Migration and Passport Office will contribute to the costs of language courses for the first five years after the foreigner enters the country.

Eligible are natural persons resident in Liechtenstein with:

  • "provisionally admitted" status in accordance with the Asylum Act
  • Annual residence permit (B)
  • Settlement permit (C) and permanent residence permit (D)
  • Liechtenstein citizenship, provided they grew up in a foreign-language country

After five years from the date of entry, further language courses can only be funded if this is justified by special circumstances.

The special circumstances must be presented in writing to the Migration and Passport Office. Special circumstances may exist, for example, if the applicant was unable to attend a German course within the first five years after the permit was issued (e.g. serious illness) or if the household income is too low.

How much funding is available

The Migration and Passport Office contributes CHF 200 per course. A total of four courses are required to reach the next level.

What is supported

German courses from recognized Liechtenstein language schools that are aimed at level A1, A2 or B1 of the European Language Portfolio. People at this level can communicate in simple routine situations, can describe their own background and education, their immediate environment and things related to immediate needs, and understand sentences and expressions related to areas of life of immediate importance (workplace, school, family).

Contributions of a maximum of CHF 200.00 per language level can be granted for four courses. Exceptions to this and the funding of courses at level B2 and above are approved on a case-by-case basis upon application.

Upon written application, the APA can also grant financial support for:

  • Literacy courses / reading and writing courses
  • Low-threshold, practical and everyday language courses
  • Industry-specific language courses or job-related courses for foreign-language employees in cooperation with employers
  • Language courses with associated childcare
  • How do I get the funding

    ?

Go to one of the language schools listed below. Get advice on which course meets your needs and register for the appropriate course. You only have to pay the difference between the course fees - minus the voucher worth CHF 200.00

Funding is conditional on the eligible person attending the course. Attendance is deemed to have been provided if the course organizer confirms that the foreigner was present for at least 90% of the course duration. This does not apply to absences confirmed by a doctor (Art. 16 para. 2 AIV).
