Blood and blood products

Strict regulation and control ensure that blood and blood products are handled properly and that no diseases are transmitted. Anyone wishing to draw blood in Liechtenstein for transfusions or for the production of therapeutic products requires a permit from the Office of Public Health for the Liechtenstein market.

In this process, Swissmedic's inspectorate verifies the requirements for a permit on behalf of the Office of Public Health.

Only blood and blood products that come from inspected establishments in Switzerland or also from Austria (Landeskrankenhaus Feldkirch) may be used in the Liechtenstein national hospital. Donors are selected in accordance with international standards.

The transfusion of blood and blood products must be performed according to the criteria of the "Guidelines for Quality Assurance in Transfusion Practice". The Swiss Working Group "Quality Assurance in the Use of Blood Products" published this guide in July 2017. The laws and criteria mentioned therein are also authoritative for Liechtenstein.
