Absentee ballot
The postal vote
With the revision of the law in 2004, Liechtenstein introduced the general right to vote by post, which was applied for the first time in the 2005 parliamentary elections. Since then, all eligible voters have had the option of casting their ballot either in person at the ballot box or by mail.
Organization
With the mailing of the official voting material, voters will receive all the documents necessary for postal voting.
Procedure
The delivery envelope with which voters receive the election or voting material also serves as the delivery envelope for postal voting.
Who would like to vote by mail, puts the ballot paper into the voting envelope and seals it. In addition, he/she signs the declaration on the back of the voting card that the vote corresponds to their will.
Voting envelope and voting card with the signed declaration are returned with the same window envelope to the municipality, with which the voting material was delivered.
The window envelope can be handed over afterwards stamped to the post office or be delivered with the municipality office. The postal vote must arrive at the latest until the opening of the election and voting premises on the first election or voting day (Friday) at the municipality, or be delivered.
Delivery abroad
The municipality may deliver the voting card and the official voting material to voters abroad. This requires a written request to the municipality of residence no later than three weeks before the election or voting day.
However, this only applies to Liechtenstein citizens temporarily staying abroad. To vote in elections and referendums, ordinary residence in Liechtenstein continues to be required.
