Functionality, route division and process of winter maintenance
Districts
The approximately 100 km of national roads in Liechtenstein are divided into three districts.
- Unterland district with the operation centre in Mauren
- District Oberland with the operation centre in Vaduz
- Triesenberg district with the operation centre in Triesenberg
In Bendern (Unterland) there is a salt silo with a capacity of 25 tons for loading the sidewalk plows. A bag storage of 25 tons is located in Schaanwald.
In Vaduz (Oberland) there is a salt silo with a capacity of 200 tons and a brine plant with a tank of 10,000 liters. In addition, there is a bag storage of 25 tons.
For the roads in the highlands, Triesenberg has four salt silos with a total capacity of 600 tons as well as a grit silo with a capacity of 200 tons.
Picket service
From November 15 to March 31, a 24-hour on-call service with a small spreader is continuously on duty, monitoring all three districts and acting as a contact for the police and road maintenance. In case of need, this on-call service will call on individual or all seven subcontractors, who have their precisely defined route and task, for snow removal or salt spreading. The on-call service also provides the respective group leaders of the road maintenance as well as the sidewalk clearing contractors outside the business hours.
Four plant employees are fully assigned to the on-call service. Two employees are on standby as replacements.
Subcontractors
The seven subcontractors will provide their vehicles and chauffeurs, and will be provided with construction crews and snow plows by the Office of Civil Engineering and Geospatial Information . The subcontractors' services are monitored and billed by the Office of Civil Engineering and Geoinformation using state-of-the-art electronic means (GPS)
In the Triesenberg district, two snow blowers are provided by two other contractors. The operations of these machines are also monitored with GPS. Like all other contractors, those who provide the snow blowers are assigned precisely defined tasks. However, they are called out directly by the head of the Triesenberg depot. One of the snow blowers is stationed in the Malbun ski area, the other starts from Triesenberg.
The ten sidewalk clearing vehicles are provided by as many contractors and are called out by the on-call service or the group leaders.
Own vehicles for winter maintenance
The Office of Civil Engineering and Geoinformation itself has a Unimog 12.5-ton with snow plow and salt spreader, a municipal vehicle 5.5-ton with plow and salt spreader, three vehicles with small snow plows, and a vehicle with salt spreader body. These vehicles are mainly used during the winter service season to clear out bus stops and squares, for on-call service or for emergencies.
