Special education

Special education for children and young people with special educational or support needs is also part of school support measures. Support is provided separately in a special school or in a specific setting (hospital, clinic, etc.). The head of the Office of Education decides on the allocation to a special school on the basis of an assessment by the school psychology service. The only recognized special school in Liechtenstein is the special education day school of the Heilpädagogisches Zentrum in Schaan (hpz). The special education day school looks after children and young people whose special educational needs can no longer (temporarily) be adequately met by the special educational resources of the mainstream school. This may be the case with pronounced language difficulties or significant cognitive problems. Special schools in Switzerland or Austria also offer appropriate special or socio-educational support in the event of significant impairments in mobility, behavior or sensory functions.
