What are the requirements?
The Act of September 17, 2008 on Foreign Nationals (Foreign Nationals Act; AuG), National Law Gazette No. 311, Volume 2008, came into force on January 1, 2009 and led to a number of changes for third-country nationals (all states with the exception of the EEA states and Switzerland). Here are the most important ones:
- Family reunification requires German to be learned in the country of origin at a basic level, the level A1. This is documented by an internationally recognized certificate.
- In order to obtain a settlement permit, it is necessary to provide proof of German language skills with a certificate at language level A2 and to pass a Staatskundetest. In return, settlement can be granted after just 5 years, provided the requirements are met. The procedure is agreed and defined individually in the integration agreement. (Art. 41 AuG).
