Marriage for all

From January 1, 2025, same-sex couples will have new options due to the adjustments in the context of "marriage for all". The various options are presented below with basic information. For further information and detailed questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

From 01.01.2025, marriage, which was previously only possible for mixed-sex couples, can be entered into by both same-sex and mixed-sex couples. The relevant requirements, procedure and implementation are identical.

Registered partnership was concluded in Liechtenstein

Conversion is only possible if the registered partnership was concluded before 31.12.2024. From 01.01.2025, no new registered partnerships can be established in Liechtenstein and therefore no more conversions can be carried out.

Couples with a registered partnership concluded before 31.12.2024 have the following options:

  • They remain in their registered partnership and therefore do not change their marital status. In this case, no action is required on the part of the couple.
  • They convert their registered partnership into a marriage. The couple can choose whether they want to convert with or without a ceremony.

Registered partnership was or is concluded abroad

The conversion of a registered partnership concluded abroad is possible at any time. However, different options are available depending on the date.

Registered partnership was concluded before 31.12.2024:

  • They remain in their registered partnership and therefore do not change their marital status. The prerequisite for this is that the couple have their registered partnership concluded abroad recognized in Liechtenstein. Otherwise, they will remain in their previous marital status in Liechtenstein (e.g. "single").

  • They have their registered partnership recognized in Liechtenstein and then convert it into a marriage. The couple can choose whether they wish to carry out this conversion with or without a ceremony.

  • They first have their registered partnership recognized in Liechtenstein, but do not convert this registered partnership into a marriage, but conclude a marriage based on it

Registered partnership was concluded after 31.12.2024:

  • They remain in their registered partnership and therefore do not change their marital status. The prerequisite for this is that the couple have their registered partnership concluded abroad recognized in Liechtenstein. Otherwise, they will remain in their previous marital status in Liechtenstein (e.g. "single").

  • They first have their registered partnership recognized in Liechtenstein and then conclude a marriage based on this

Same-sex marriages that were entered into abroad before 01.01.2025 were only recognized as registered partnerships in Liechtenstein due to corresponding legal requirements. For this reason, it is possible to update such cases.

Same-sex marriages entered into abroad after 01.01.2025 will be recognized as marriages.
