Biometric data

Biometric data in passports is nothing new. The machine-readable passport used before 2006 already contained biometric data: Photo, size and signature of the person whose name it is in. What is new about the passport is that this data is stored on a chip. In addition to the data contained in the machine-readable passport, a digital photo in jpg format is stored on the chip, which is identical to the photo shown in the passport. Since October 1, 2011, the prints of one finger each of the left and right hands have also been stored on the chip.

As the data in the passport is stored electronically, it can be compared with the data of the person presenting the electronic passport in an automated process. In this way, it can be checked quickly and reliably whether the person presenting a passport is actually the rightful owner of the passport. This makes it considerably more difficult to misuse a passport.
