Disposal facilities
Waste may only be disposed of in approved disposal facilities. Waste disposal facilities require an operating license from the Office for the Environment. Private and public waste treatment facilities implement this objective. Non-recyclable mineral residual waste is deposited in an environmentally friendly manner in landfills
Waste disposal facilities require an operating permit from the Office for the Environment.
For a permit, an application must be submitted to the Office for the Environment:
Residues from waste incineration or waste that is not suitable for material or thermal recycling must be deposited in landfills. The Swiss Ordinance on the Prevention and Disposal of Waste (Waste Ordinance, VVEA) regulates, among other things, the prevention and disposal of waste as well as for the construction and operation of waste facilities - including landfills. It distinguishes between the five landfill types A to E:
- Type A: Uncontaminated excavated material
- Type B: Remaining inert material
- Type C: Residual materials
- Type D: Slag
- Type E: Reactor materials
In Liechtenstein, only landfills of types A and B exist. At all landfill types, the respective limits for pollutants (heavy metals and organic compounds) in the material must be met.
On type A landfills may be deposited in particular:
- Excavated and excavated material consisting of at least 99 percent by weight of unconsolidated rock or crushed rock and otherwise of other mineral construction waste
- Gravel wash slurry from the treatment of excavated and quarried material
- Removed topsoil and subsoil
- Bedload from bedload collectors
On type B landfills may be deposited in particular:
- Construction waste consisting of at least 95 percent by weight of stones or stone-like components
- Wastes arising from the manufacture of ceramic products, bricks, tiles and earthenware after firing
- Flat glass and packaging glass
- mineral wastes containing bonded asbestos fibers
- vitrified residues, if no mass transfer with other wastes can take place
Other substances with higher pollutant material can - provided that the limits are met - be disposed of at the Lienz landfill in Altstätten (type D/E).
Other substances with higher levels of pollutants can be disposed of at the Lienz landfill in Altstätten (type D/E) - provided that the limit values are complied with.
