Your questions, our answers (FAQ)
We have collected and answered important questions about educational assistance for you. Please note that the answers are not exhaustive and that each application is considered and processed by us individually based on the relevant laws.
1. What are educational grants, i.e. scholarships and loans?
Scholarships and loans are one-off or recurring cash benefits provided by the Principality of Liechtenstein for education or training. The difference lies in the repayment:
Scholarships do not have to be repaid, while student loans must be repaid
2. For which costs can a training grant (scholarship and loan) be applied for?
In principle, costs for school fees, accommodation, meals, teaching materials and travel expenses can be claimed. In addition, a lump sum can be claimed as a contribution to living expenses under certain conditions. The costs are only recognized under certain conditions and up to a legally defined maximum amount.
3. How is the amount of the educational grant (scholarship and loan) calculated?
The amount of the training grant depends on various factors: The actual amount of costs incurred for the training plays an important role. In addition, the personal income and asset situation (personal contribution) and, in some cases, the personal financial contributions of immediate family members such as parents, spouse or partner are also taken into account.
4. What are personal contributions?
A basic distinction is made between two relevant personal contributions:
1) For applicants aged 18 and over, the financial resources of the applicant and, if married, the potential personal contributions of the spouse are taken into account.
2) For applicants up to the age of 25, the personal contributions of both parents are taken into account, regardless of marital status.
5) When is the parents' own contribution not taken into account?
Parental contributions are not taken into account if the person submitting the application:
1) has children of their own
or
2) has been in full-time employment for a total of at least three years from the age of 18. Gainful employment of less than six months' uninterrupted duration is not taken into account. Apprenticeships and internships do not count as gainful employment.
6. How long is it possible to receive training allowance?
Training courses following upper secondary level are supported. A total duration of up to 8 years is possible. Semesters not applied for and rejected are also counted.
If an education is not completed during the normal duration of education due to illness, the birth of a child, care of own children or another compelling reason, the duration of support can be extended by a maximum of three years beyond the minimum duration of education
7. For how long can a training allowance be applied for?
A training allowance can be applied for for a maximum of 1 year. A subsequent application must then be submitted.
8. How often are training grants paid out?
A grant is usually released for payment to the National Financial Accounting Office after the ruling and the 14-day appeal period has elapsed. Payment is possible at the earliest 8 weeks before the start of the ordered training period.
As a rule, a loan is released for the next disbursement to the National Financial Accounting Office three weeks after receipt of the signed loan agreement.
9. If an application for a scholarship is rejected, is it possible to obtain a loan?
No, a loan is not possible if the application for a scholarship is rejected.
10. In which cases does a scholarship have to be refunded?
Scholarships must be refunded by the person submitting the application if they have received them unlawfully. This includes, for example, failing to provide proof of education within the deadline set by the scholarship office and/or using it for an improper purpose.
A loan must always be repaid anyway.
11. In which cases is a power of attorney or a waiver of appeal required?
Power of attorney: If a person of legal age submits an application and close relatives such as parents or spouses or other persons wish to obtain information about the status of the application or to inspect the documents, a power of attorney must be submitted for data protection reasons. Otherwise, information cannot be provided.
Waiver of right of appeal: The payment of scholarships can be brought forward by submitting a written waiver of right of appeal. This means that the person submitting the application waives the right to lodge an appeal.
12. Which training and further education courses are supported?
Training or further training can be supported if the following conditions are met:
1) It is a first or second course of training, further training lasting at least 15 days (90 hours or 120 lessons) or a language course lasting at least one month

17. What requirements must be met in order to apply for a scholarship or loan?
An actual claim can only be answered after individual processing and the corresponding disposition. The following considerations are essential:
1) Training grants are generally only awarded after completion of compulsory schooling and if the student is suitable for the chosen course of training.
2) Furthermore, the place of residence is decisive: At the time of the start of the training to be supported, a regular residence in Liechtenstein is required (at least three years without interruption or a total of five years if there are interruptions).
3) In addition, no IV pension due to total disability may be drawn.

21. Is it possible to apply for a scholarship if your education is already supported by a third party?
Third-party support includes, in particular, social security benefits and state benefits for the purpose of professional integration and/or contributions from employers, private individuals and institutions in Switzerland and abroad. The person submitting the application is obliged to disclose any third-party support.
If the person submitting the application is supported by third parties, this support will be deducted from the costs to be recognized.
22. May the field of study be changed?
A change of study program or discontinuation of a study program may only take place once. As a rule, no more educational grants are awarded after two interruptions or exclusions, unless exceptions, such as health reasons, can be claimed.
23 How does the application process work?

The eID.li is the digital identity of the Principality of Liechtenstein, with which natural persons can securely identify themselves and log in to electronic services using a mobile device.
