eHealth Strategy

The eHealth Strategy of the Principality of Liechtenstein lays the foundations for the sustainable development of an IT-supported and modern healthcare system in the Principality of Liechtenstein. The eHealth Strategy was approved by the government in 2012. EHealth also plays a central role in the Digital Agenda Liechtenstein, which was adopted in 2019.

eHealth Vision

  • People in the Principality of Liechtenstein can access relevant information about themselves and obtain services from the healthcare professionals of their choice, regardless of time and place.
  • They are actively involved in decisions regarding their health behaviors and health problemsand thus strengthen their health literacy.
  • Information and communication technologies are used in a way that ensures the interconnectedness of health care actors and that processes are of better quality, safer and more efficient.

eHealth goals

  • Improving quality of care and patient safety through access to relevant patient information by treating physicians
  • Increase efficiency by avoiding unnecessary multiple consultations and incorrect treatments and by reducing drug incompatibilities
  • Medium- and long-term cost reduction through quality improvements

These goals also correspond to the main goals according to the eHealth Strategy Switzerland. Additional goals for Liechtenstein are:

  • To ensure a modern healthcare system in Liechtenstein with the principle of "smart follower" instead of "first mover"
  • Connection to the healthcare systems of neighboring countries

eHealth benefits for private individuals / patients

  • Lower risk by having the right information in the right place at the right time
  • No more role as "mailman or mailwoman" of medical documents
  • Patient history does not have to be retold over and over again
  • Data can no longer be lost (e.g., vaccination booklet)
  • Life-saving data are stored (e.g. allergies)
  • Fewer unnecessary or duplicate examinations
  • Fewer unnecessary doctor and hospital visits
  • Fewer complications (e.g., reduction in drug intolerances)
  • Higher quality of care
  • Smooth transition between treatment sites
  • Lower cost sharing thanks to fewer examinations

eHealth benefits for the public sector

  • Ensuring to belong to a modern healthcare system
  • Ensuring connectivity to neighboring countries and beyond
  • Optimizing care processes
  • Increased cost transparency and efficiency
  • Reduction of potential abuses
