Bilateral Relations Austria – Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein and Austria have always had close and friendly relations, which are based on the political, geographical, cultural, social and economic proximity of both countries. Almost 50 agreements confirm these close relations in various areas such as culture, education, health, internal security, justice, economy and social affairs.

In all policy areas, there is a regular and intensive exchange between the heads of state as well as at governmental and administrative level. Close cooperation in the region, especially with neighbouring Vorarlberg, is of great importance to Liechtenstein.

Through the European Economic Area (EEA) and the Schengen area, both countries are closely linked politically and economically and integrated into European structures.

Austria is an important location for companies from the industrial and financial sectors - Liechtenstein companies employ around 1’900 persons in Austria. More than 8’500 persons commute daily from Austria to Liechtenstein for work. Liechtenstein and Austria form a homogeneous industrial landscape that is geared towards exports in the high-quality sector and demonstrates a high level of innovative strength. Austria is one of Liechtenstein's most important trading partners.

In 1998, the Principality of Liechtenstein opened its resident embassy in Vienna. In addition to maintaining bilateral relations between Liechtenstein and Austria, the Embassy in Vienna is responsible for consular support for Liechtenstein citizens in Austria. Austria is represented in Liechtenstein by an embassy based in Vienna. There is also an Austrian Honorary Consulate General in Liechtenstein.
