Animal transport
Animal transports are about animal welfare on the one hand, but also about the possible spread of epidemics on the other. Animal traffic control makes it possible to trace animal transports.
The safety of humans and animals also plays a major role. For example, all means of transport for cloven-hoofed animals must have a closing grid at the rear. The provisions of animal welfare, animal disease and road traffic legislation must be complied with.
The transport of horses to neighboring countries to participate in sporting events, training and other events can be a challenge, as especially in Italy and France such transports are often classified as commercial and therefore subject to authorization. This puts many riders in the situation of having to present an EU transport permit, including proof of competence and vehicle registration, when abroad.
In order to be able to register as a transport company in the FSVO database, you must provide proof that you are "competent" with regard to the performance of horse transports.
To obtain an EU transport permit type I, the following is necessary:
- Completion of the course "Fachkunde Pferdetransporte" of the Swiss Livestock Trade Association (SVV)
- Authorization of the transport vehicle - The following entry in the vehicle registration document is necessary: At No. 25 "Bodywork" must be entered "Horse transport" and optionally the code 177.
- Submit permit application to the Food and Veterinary Office
For the commercial transport of animals within Switzerland, one needs a specialized, profession-independent training (FBA) and must undergo regular further training. The training organization must be recognized by the FSVO. The aim of the training is to ensure that animal transport personnel handle animals with care and provide for their professional care.
When transporting pets commercially, there are specifications that must be followed.
However, the following aspects should also be considered when transporting pets privately:
- A transport box must be sized so that the animal can stand, sit and rest in a normal body position.
- The animal must be able to drink or eat regularly on long journeys.
- Depending on the animal must also be scheduled regular stops so that it can clean up and move.
