Night Driving Permits
The night driving ban applies from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Sunday driving permits
The Sunday driving ban applies on all Sundays and public holidays.
Not covered by Sunday and night driving bans:
- For the transport of foodstuffs that are not frozen, ultra-high temperature or sterilized and whose consumption period is 30 days or less.
- For the transportation of animals for slaughter and sport horses.
- For the transport of cut flowers.
- Vehicles for the transport of people
- Agricultural vehicles
- Vehicles carrying a semi-trailer with a superstructure used for habitation
- Trips of the fire department, civil defense, ambulance, police, and trips for assistance in disasters
- Commercial tractors, motor carts and work carts and their trailers, provided that the vehicles are used exclusively for agricultural journeys during the prohibition periods
Vehicles which fall under the Sunday and night driving ban:
- Heavy motor vehicles over 3.5 tons
- Commercial tractors and work motor vehicles over 3.5 tons
- Semi-trailer motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating over 5.0 tons
- Vehicles carrying a trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating exceeding 3.5 tons
Exceptions to Sunday and night driving bans are only permitted if the journey on Sunday and at night time is urgent and cannot be avoided either by organizational measures or by choosing another means of transport.
Sunday and night driving permits may be issued for:
- For the carriage of circus, showman, market rider, orchestra, theater material and the like.
- For the carriage of daily newspapers with editorial content and of postal consignments within the scope of the statutory duty to perform, as well as for journeys for current television reports.
- For journeys during the construction and maintenance of roads and railways as well as works lines (e.g. electricity, water, telecom lines).
For each authorized transport, a quarter of the load volume can be filled with other goods.
Who issues the permit?
These permits are issued for Liechtenstein by the Office for Road Traffic or in Switzerland by the canton where the journey requiring a permit begins, with validity for the whole of Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
