Interoperability (IOP)
Interoperability in the context of Schengen means that in future, authorized authorities will be able to search for persons in several information systems in parallel. The search in all systems will be carried out via the European Search Portal (ESP). However, the current access rights of the responsible authorities to the individual existing systems will remain unchanged.
Additional systems will be created to ensure interoperability. For example, an automated comparison of a person's biometric data is planned for the future. Collections of biographical and biometric data of third-country nationals in a common repository are also planned. New possibilities will also be created to uncover the true identity of people who are registered in several information systems under false identities or multiple identities. Two EU regulations and their national implementation will create a framework for ensuring interoperability between the Entry-Exit System (EES), the Visa Information System (VIS), the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), Eurodac, the second-generation Schengen Information System (SIS II) and the European Criminal Records Information System on third-country nationals and stateless persons (ECRIS-TCN).
