Vehicle Deregistration

When taking a vehicle out of circulation, there are the following options:

Sign cancellation

The vehicle registration certificate is cancelled and the license plates are destroyed. When the plate is surrendered, taxes are automatically refunded. A corresponding notification is also sent to the insurance company.

Identification card cancellation and plate disposal

The vehicle registration card will be cancelled and the license plates can be deposited for up to a maximum of one year. The fee for the deposit is CHF 50.00, for motorcycles and trailers CHF 30.00. When the plate is handed in, the taxes are automatically refunded. A corresponding notification is also sent to the insurance company.

Sign deposit

If you do not use your vehicle for a certain period of time, to stop the taxes and insurance, you can deposit the license plates. The fee for the deposit is also CHF 50.00, for motorcycles and trailers CHF 30.00. When the plate is returned, the taxes are automatically refunded. A corresponding notification also goes to the insurance company.

Pass cancellation

You can make a badge cancellation if you redeem a new vehicle within 14 days. The taxes as well as the insurance premium will not be interrupted in this case, unless it is a changeable license plate.

Achtung: The Office of Road Traffic recommends to cancel the corresponding vehicle registration card in case of resale of the vehicle.
