New identity card and new residence permit, adjustments to the biometric residence permit
Brief project description
Regulation (EU) 2019/1157 of the European Parliament and of the Council of June 20, 2019 on enhancing the security of identity cards of Union citizens and residence documents issued to Union citizens and their family members exercising their right to free movement was adopted into the EEA Agreement by Decision No 50/2023 of the EEA Joint Committee of March 17, 2023. This defines the general requirements for national identity cards and residence permits. Liechtenstein's identity card (ID) and residence permit (AA) have already largely met the requirements of this EU regulation. In order to continue to comply with the defined requirements, the design of the ID and the AA as well as the personalization infrastructure must be adapted. The card design of the biometric residence permit (BPP) does not need to be adapted, as it already fully complies with the EU requirements. However, the group of people who receive this card must be expanded due to the EU regulation.
