Elementary school

Primary school comprises five year groups and marks the beginning of compulsory schooling. It is the common educational institution for all children and can be attended free of charge. Children who have reached the age of six by the end of June of the current year are admitted to elementary school.

The task of elementary school is to familiarize pupils with elementary knowledge and skills. It serves their social, emotional and physical development. Elementary school teachers teach pupils the foundations for secondary school.

The following subjects are taught at elementary school: Mathematics, German, English, Realien, Visual Arts, Music, Sport, Textiles and Technical Design, Religion.

At the end of a school year, all children move up to the next school level. Exceptions to this are pupils who wish to repeat a school level voluntarily. Permission from the school management is required to repeat year 5, which is only granted in exceptional cases.

Learners with school difficulties are supported within the framework of special school measures or of reinforced special educational measures (special education) .

In addition to the public elementary school, Liechtenstein also has a private school run by the association Liechtensteinische Waldorfschule and a bilingual elementary school (formatio Bilinguale Privatschule), for which parents have to pay school fees.
