Medical services

Starting from January 1, 2017, physicians' services in Switzerland are legally billed according to the nationwide rate structure, as specified in Article 16c, Paragraph 3 of the Health Insurance Act (KVG).

In response to requests from tariff partners such as santésuisse, H+, and FMH, the Swiss Federal Council established TARMED on September 30, 2002, as the unified nationwide single-service tariff structure for outpatient medical services. The Swiss Federal Council last approved TARMED version 1.08 on June 15, 2012. Since the beginning of 2013, the Swiss Federal Council has the authority to adjust the physician tariff structure if it is deemed no longer appropriate and the involved parties cannot reach an agreement on a revision. The Federal Council utilized this subsidiary competence and made adjustments to the TARMED physician tariff through an ordinance on June 20, 2014. Additionally, the Federal Council intervened in the tariff structure for a second time by amending this ordinance on October 18, 2017. The Ordinance on the Establishment and Adjustment of Rate Structures in Health Insurance can be accessed at  https://www.admin.ch/opc/de/classified-compilation/20140425/index.html.
