On June 30, 2024, the total population of Liechtenstein, i.e. the permanent and non-permanent population, amounted to 41,232 people. Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to an increase of 1.3%. The proportion of the permanent population is 98.7% and that of the non-permanent population is 1.3%.
The 2.3% increase in the permanent population to 40,687 people and, in particular, the number of foreign nationals in the permanent population, which at 14,281 people is 4.6% higher than in the previous year, are striking. On the other hand, the non-permanent population on June 30, 2024 is 40.6% lower than in the previous year at 545 people. The main reason for these shifts is the adjusted, new population definition that will be used from the 2024 reporting year. More detailed information on the changes to the definition and the impact on the population figures can be found in the document on methodology and quality in this publication and in the special publication comparing the new and old population definition as at December 31, 2023. A summary of the changes can be found under Methodology and quality in the "Fact sheet on the adjustment of the population definition".
Compared to the previous year, the working permanent population increased from 20,591 persons to 20,836 persons as at June 30, 2024. The proportion of employed persons in the total permanent population is 51.2%.
