Strengthening children's rights in conflict zones

Liechtenstein is making a contribution of CHF 50,000 to support the mandate of the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Children in Armed Conflict.

At a time when UN peacekeeping missions are being reduced, the commitment to the protection of children in armed conflicts remains of crucial importance. With its contribution, Liechtenstein is reaffirming its commitment and solidarity to the worldwide defence of children's rights. Thanks to Liechtenstein's contribution, co-operation with conflict parties in 25 countries and one regional situation can be strengthened. The special envoy works closely with UN field missions to develop action plans to prevent violations. In addition, the mandate supports the improvement of data and reporting as a basis for effective prevention and response strategies. The mandate of the Special Envoys plays an important role in the global protection of children's rights by combating the six most serious violations against children in conflict zones as defined by the UN Security Council. These include the recruitment and use of child soldiers, killing and maiming, sexual violence, attacks on schools and hospitals, abductions and the denial of humanitarian aid.
