Vaduz (ots) -
On May 23 and 24, 2022, the meeting of German-speaking Ministers of Home Affairs took place in Frankfurt at the invitation of Germany. Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser received her counterparts Federal Councillor Karin Keller-Sutter from Switzerland, Interior Minister Sabine Monauni from Liechtenstein, as well as their counterparts Minister Jean Asselborn from Luxembourg and Federal Minister Gerhard Karner from Austria.
The talks focused on crisis management, resilience of democracies and cross-border police cooperation.
Crisis management
Against the backdrop of the Covid 19 pandemic, Russia's war of aggression on Ukraine in violation of international law, and the heightened threat of cyberattacks, Ministers of Home Affairs exchanged views on preparing for and managing cross-border crises. The need for close, cross-border cooperation was emphasized.
Resilience of democracies
The Ministers of Home Affairs also discussed how to deal with radicalization tendencies and their influence on the formation of political will, as well as the spread of false or misleading information. There was agreement that these challenges must be met with defensible democracies and the defense of the rule of law.
Cross-border police cooperation
Finally, the Ministers of Home Affairs dealt with cross-border police cooperation and unanimously emphasized that a successful and targeted fight against cross-border crime can only succeed together and by using the numerous police instruments. Against this background, the efforts of the EU to further harmonize cross-border cooperation - and in particular the exchange of information - between the police authorities of the Schengen countries with a European police cooperation code were expressly welcomed.
"Especially in times of crisis, it is important to know reliable neighbors at your side. The meeting of the German-speaking Ministers of Home Affairs provides an ideal framework for exchanging experiences and finding joint answers to current challenges" said Minister of Home Affairs Monauni.
The next meeting in this format will take place in Switzerland in 2023.
