Government adopts state forest inventory

The government adopted the Liechtenstein National Forest Inventory at its meeting on November 19, 2024. There have been positive developments, including an increase in biotope value and thus ecological quality.

The most important findings include the fact that since the last national forest inventory in 2010, the forest area has increased by 278 hectares to 5,976 hectares and the proportion of coniferous species in the lowlands has fallen from 43% to 39%. Through the targeted removal of spruce trees and the promotion of climate-adapted tree species (e.g. lime, oak and beech), the forests in the lowlands are developing into site-appropriate hardwood stands. In addition, the proportion of forest with high biotope value has increased significantly since 2010. The efforts of the Liechtenstein Forestry Service to manage the forests in a more natural way are thus clearly evident. However, the damage to forest regeneration caused by hoofed game is very high, with fir trees in particular being heavily browsed.

The Liechtenstein National Forest Inventory records the condition of the local forest every twelve years and collects data on the main tree species, the mix of coniferous and deciduous trees and the stand structure, among other things. In addition, it is investigated how the forests are regenerating, which damage patterns are present and the state of the forest ecology. From this, it can be deduced, for example, how sustainably the forest is used.
