Emergency Assistance for Ukraine and Sudan

In the context of the cooperation with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the Liechtenstein Government has decided to fund a project of the non-governmental organizations Mercy Corps, Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation, Right to Protection, and Joint Emergency Response for Ukraine with CHF 200’000, and a project by Mercy Corps to meet the basic needs of the civilian population in Sudan with CHF 250’000.

Strengthening Economic Resilience in Ukraine

Due to the war in Ukraine, many businesses had to either cease operations or reduce their activities. The once thriving and now restricted agricultural sector forces especially small farmers to find new sources of income. By providing grants to small businesses, self-employed individuals, and agricultural enterprises, the “Economic Resilience Program” gives these businesses a boost. The program aims to improve the livelihoods of the Ukrainian population to reduce their dependence on humanitarian assistance in the form of money and goods. The current phase of the program will make it possible to reach up to 17’000 people in nine of the most war-affected oblasts of Ukraine through grants, business consulting, and training until March 2025. Liechtenstein's contribution improves the humanitarian situation of the affected population and strengthens their resilience.

Covering the Basic Needs of the Civilian Population in Sudan

The armed conflict in Sudan, which has been ongoing for over a year, has led to one of the worst humanitarian crises worldwide. At the same time, the conflict receives little attention from the international community compared to major crises in Ukraine and the Middle East. Through the project named SCALE (Sudan Conflict: Affected Populations Lifesaving Emergency), Mercy Corps provides vulnerable, conflict-affected, and displaced persons with cash assistance, enabling them to autonomously and directly meet their basic needs. To strengthen their coping capacities and resilience, the project also supports the improvement of food security and livelihoods. SCALE adopts a holistic approach, building on Mercy Corps' existing development and peacebuilding projects. In collaboration with local partners, the project aims to amplify the voices and address the needs of conflict-affected women. Supporting this project aligns with Liechtenstein's focus on forgotten and underfunded crises.
