The Botanical-Zoological Society Liechtenstein-Sarganserland-Werdenberg (BZG) and the Office of Environment are asking the public to help with research into the two beetle species, the Alpine longhorned beetle and the stag beetle. Observations can be reported directly via the newly created website www.hirschkaefer.li . The website will expand the existing monitoring system and simplify reporting.
Both beetle species spend several years as larvae in oak and beech deadwood and are therefore important bioindicators for natural age structures, tree species compositions and old and dead wood stocks in forests.
Due to this specific way of life, it is not possible to carry out comprehensive monitoring for these two beetle species. Therefore, detection data on these beetles is to be collected in accordance with the Liechtenstein species monitoring concept as part of a so-called citizen science project. The species monitoring concept can be found on the website of the Office of Environment in the Publications section at www.llv.li
The data can be accessed with a time delay via the website of info fauna, the Swiss Center for the Cartography of Fauna (lepus.unine.ch/carto).
