Government approves protective forest designation

In its meeting on November 19, 2024, the government approved the Liechtenstein protection forest designation (SWA). One of the primary objectives of the protection forest designation is to strengthen or maintain the protective function of the forest against natural hazards.

Liechtenstein is a mountainous country. Without intact forests, which protect against natural hazards such as avalanches, rockfalls, landslides and floods, large areas of the country would not be habitable. Forests are an essential guarantee for the safety of the population. For the most efficient and targeted protective forest management possible, it is important to know where the forest areas that can protect against natural hazards are located.

The procedures for protection forest designation and the methods for modeling natural hazard processes have evolved since the last protection forest designation in the 1990s. In addition, the damage potential in the country has increased due to population and economic growth. For these reasons, a complete revision and modernization of the protective forest designation was carried out.
